“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
“This little light of mine… I’m going to let it shine…”
Sound familiar? This line is from a popular gospel song meant for children. We might remember singing it in Sunday school when we were younger. But the song does make us question: What does it really mean to “shine a light?”
Is it about dedicating time to a charitable cause? Volunteering within our community? Traveling overseas to help those in need?
Shining a light to the world first starts internally. It’s a process of ensuring that God’s love is within our hearts and that our character changes to resemble God’s image and likeness, first. Then, just like how a city on a hill cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14), this light can “shine out” naturally through our actions. We become more loving, freely forgiving, and grow a heart to bless others around us.
What are some ways that we can let our light shine brightly?
