“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-20)
Jesus shared these words with believers who lived at the time of the First Coming. He desired to strengthen their hearts against seeking after the riches of the world. He instead encouraged them to seek the eternal treasures of heaven.
Fast forward to today, and it surely seems that we need Jesus’s strength and encouragement more than ever before. After all, the “riches” of the world have only become more plentiful, enticing, and attractive than that of 2,000 years ago.
However, we realize that there’s nothing the world can offer us that actually lasts. Living in a beautiful home, driving a luxurious car, and wearing brand name clothing can only give us temporary satisfaction, at best.
Jesus reminds us that the greatest treasure we can seek is that of the kingdom of heaven. And through his words, we are empowered to make the choice of focusing our hearts towards what really matters.
